Stephanie Schocker – Scott Community College

“By choosing this profession it has helped me gain awareness in the correct way of handling patient information, and the importance of patient confidentiality. I feel that with my knowledge in HIM, I can assure that the information will be placed within the patient record in an accurate and timely manner to be available to physicians to aide in proper patient care, and also for financial purposes to aide in accurate and timely billing.”

Mary Jeanne Smith – Kirkwood Community College

“I am not your traditional student entering the health information field with a previous background in manufacturing. The changing global market transitioned my place of employment to a location out of the country. It was then when I began to ponder my interests and through the assistance and guidance of KCC, chose to pursue a new career in the health field with always having an interest regarding the field of health science. I researched extensively the job market pertaining to job security, opportunities for growth, variety within the field, and how a professional RHIT could make a difference in people’s lives. As I enter the profession, I feel it will afford me unlimited professional growth, provide a good income, allow me to be a part of a growing profession within the medical field, and provide challenges and rewards.

Growing up in a family of 9, I acquired values of honesty, compassion, cooperation, determination, ambition, patience, discipline, and understanding how important it was to work in harmony with other members of the family. Along with my childhood values, I feel I can bring professional values regarding compromise to appreciate different points of view, confidence in doing a good job, knowledge reflecting the skills I have acquired at Kirkwood, organization in keeping on task, integrity to be the person I have developed into my entire life, and service to someday share my knowledge with others in the field by mentoring new graduates.”

Lacey McLarnan – Northeast Iowa Community College, Peosta Campus

“When deciding on a college program to attend, I knew I wanted to focus on the medical field. The most attractive aspect of a career in healthcare is that workers are continuously learning new information and methods of executing the tasks required of them. As computers and electronic medical records become more and more prevalent in health care facilities, the need for individuals trained in computers and growing technologies increases.

During this economic recession, many people are concerned about the stability of their jobs. However, I still feel secure with my choice of this career. This profession offers more job security than most. Healthcare will always be a necessity, and health information, billing, auditing, and coding are all integral parts of every healthcare facility. I feel confident that this profession will offer rewarding positions for the extent of my working life. After graduation from NICC, I plan to further my education in an RHIA program. My goal will be to obtain a position in HIM or administration. I feel confident in my chances of finding a rewarding career with room to grow and expand my abilities.”

Lisa Shipman – Indian Hills Community College

“I am not the traditional college student. I worked for 20 years through different variations of secretarial/administrative assistant positions. Having noticed a drop in business and an overall downturn in the construction industry, I knew that I needed to have a fall-back plan.

I started researching trends in career fields and looking for an up-and-coming career. I noticed the area of healthcare was rapidly expanding and was forecasted to continue to grow despite economic pressures. Finding that Indian Hills offered the HIT program completely online, I felt this would be the best option for me. The HIT technology profession offers a wide range of job opportunities in a multitude of capacities. Personally I appreciate being able to participate in providing excellent patient care without having direct patient contact.”
